Wait … you’re moving from a VW to a Ford? Weren’t you just looking at a new Jetta recently?
Aye. VW dealers here want MSRP plus a $2,000 “because we can get away with it fee” for a new Jetta TDI. They are in low supply and high demand. In two months, I haven’t seen a single “deal” on a new TDI Jetta. I found a 2006 from a private party for $16,500.
So I looked around and narrowed the search to the Jetta TDI, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and Chevy Malibu. We drove the Malibu and think we understand why GM is going bankrupt. We drove the Fusion and were quite surprised. It’s roomy, the leather seats are great, it handles like the Mazda Miata it’s suspension system came from, and JD Powers and Consumer Reports both ranked its build quality as among the highest. It is also fun to drive.
For the same money, I could have an 09 Fusion, 09 Malibu, 05 Altima, 04 Mercedes E320, 04 BMW 5 series, or an 06 TDI. For $10k more I can have an 09 TDI. For the $10k discount on the Fusion, it would take a decade for the TDI to pay for its great mileage. A decade.
The Fusion better fits two car seats. The ambient lighting is a major hit with the kiddies. The SYNC integration with my iPhone is a major hit with daddy. So is the V6.
